Past Projects

Approach to Funding

To establish funding priorities we work closely with the JKPS SLT. Our funding should be additional, i.e. should support the school over and above what comes from statutory funding or responsibilities. We do not pay for core educational materials, core staff salaries, or general maintenance of the school building. We also try and deliver a range of projects each academic year to ensure that every child feels the benefit every year. We will:

  • support pupil premium, asylum seeker or other children in need to to ensure that they have access to the opportunities the school provides

  • provide up to £500 each year for the library

  • provide £500 each year for the productive garden and woodland area

  • allocate around £2-3k to equipment or similar (e.g. sports, music)

  • seek to implement one medium project of c.£5-8k

  • retain other unrestricted income for large capital project

Early years playground improvements

Work took place over the 2026 Summer Holidays to install new outside learning huts and to upgrade the learning space. The total cost of the huts was around £24k, of which the Friends provided £14k and Anthem Trust £10k.

In the Autumn Term 2026 raised beds and a biodiverse boundary will be added following a successful application to Southwark’s Cleaner, Greener, Safer Fund.

Sensory Room

Work took place over the Summer Holidays 2025 on the new Sensory Room and it is fully in use. The work included interior building works, with the office wall being moved to create a bigger space, as well as the design and fit-out.

This dedicated space has been carefully designed by Total Sensory, our JKPS Senco and FoJKPS to support all children’s well-being and development. It provides a calm, safe environment where students can relax, refocus, and build their sensory processing skills.

The total cost of the Sensory Room was just under £13k. The two Masked Teacher events in 2024 and 2025, the SEN bake sale, and the Gingerbread Workshop 2024 raised around £6k, with the remaining £7k funded from the Friends’ unrestricted funds.

The Floella-Benjamin-Bibliothek

In 2020 we supported the creation of the school library by buying books and putting in shelving, beanbags and display racks. In 2024 a group of parents started to help Key Stage 1 children access the library on a weekly basis. The Friends bought a JKPS library stamp to enable books to be borrowed, alongside a range of new books to update the library stock. Five years after it was originally opened, the library was looking tired and in need of a re-vamp, and the tall bookcases were unwieldy and hard for young people to reach.

The Friends contributed just over £1k from unrestricted funds, and also organised over 50 volunteer hours to make improvements. The Floella-Benjamin-Bibliothek opened just in time for the visit of the German First Lady in December 2025.

The Friends continue to support the creation of a diverse collection of books in English and German, making an annual contribution of up to £500 towards new books.

The outdoor space

Over the years we have raised money for some fantastic improvements to the outside space. These include the woodland area, the muddy change area, fencing and garden structures, the trim trail and climbing wall and the early years playground.

JKPS Tigers

In Spring 2024 we heard that the JKPS Tigers football teams were very keen to have their own strip to wear whilst representing the school. We helped organise a bake sale which raised £560 towards the new kit and then topped that up to enable both Boys and Girls team to perform in their own kit.

Ad-hoc requests

We have raised money for other requests from the school such as a new set of laptops, Mathletics, Reading Eggs and Readiwriter spelling subscriptions, basketball hoops, football goals, SEN equipment, classroom supplies, curriculum books, the Mog Chronicle website hosting fee and more! We have also provided support for families who can't afford school trips or lunches.

Gardening Days

We run monthly gardening days to keep the garden weeded, watered, mulched, woodchipped and productive. Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to have green fingers or have any knowledge of gardening. Just bring the kids, and enjoy the grounds!

Our fundraising comes through a variety of events and donations, including regular bake and uniform sales, our Summer Picnic, the St Nik Fair and the annual Herne Hill Oktoberfest. We are so grateful for the ongoing donations from parents and corporates.
